CHAPTER 22

Emily yawned as she stretched out on the bed. It was comfy, and she didn’t want to get up. Then she remembered her morning appointment and jumped up. She couldn’t afford to be late.

She padded to the kitchen and turned on the coffeemaker. Soon delicious coffee streamed down into her mug, and her first taste of it didn’t disappoint.

Emily moved over to the windows and gazed out as she sipped her coffee. So this was what a peaceful morning of God’s nature looked like—the sun rising in the blue picturesque sky and casting beautiful rays among the Christmas trees as they swayed with the morning breeze. She could admire this view forever, but she had a place she needed to be.

She took a quick shower, dressed in a loose sweater and a pair of jeans, and headed out. Soon she arrived at St. Andrews orphanage, where she’d been volunteering since she arrived in Dexington. A little figure in a coat over her pajamas was waiting for her on the porch.

“Miss Emily!” the little four-year-old girl screamed and flew down the stairs.

Emily caught her in her arms and nuzzled her blonde hair. “How are you today, Hannah?”

The little girl grinned. “I’ve been waiting for you forever.”

“She sure has.” Emily looked up to see Elsie, the orphanage’s cook, coming down the stairs. Emily hadn’t even noticed her presence. “She has been on pins and needles since she woke up and has probably worn a hole through the porch floor.”

“Thank you for waiting with her.”

“My pleasure. You know this little one is special.” She ruffled Hannah’s hair, and the little girl giggled. “I’ll be on my way now. I have a few items I need to grab from the grocery store.”

“Thank you.” Emily watched with Hannah as Elsie entered her car and drove off. Then she turned to Hannah. “Now, let’s get you all cleaned up, little one.”
